Packhouses

Packhouses need steady airflow, correct temperatures and equipment that can cope with load-shedding, dust and long Northen Cape shifts. Modern Equipment supports produce handling, storage and wash-area workflows from New Park, Kimberley and across the region.

Packhouse conditions that shape the job

A packhouse is not just a cold room with a fan. It has intake points, wash-down areas, grading lines, storage spaces and truck loading zones, all working at different temperatures and humidity levels. In Kimberley and the wider Northern Cape, hot afternoons, dust, dry air and load-shedding can all upset produce quality if the layout is not planned properly.

Modern Equipment works with packhouse owners who need practical support for ventilation and refrigeration from first layout right through to commissioning. The aim is simple: keep product in spec, protect staff comfort and reduce spoilage while making sure the plant can still run when municipal power is unstable or a generator comes on late.

Typical equipment used in packhouses

The equipment set depends on the crop, throughput and how long produce stays on site. Some packhouses only need strong ventilation and a few controlled storage areas. Others need full cold chain support with pre-cooling, ripening control and backup power planning. We match the kit to the workflow, not the other way round.

  • Wall or roof mounted ventilation units for fresh-air movement in grading and packing zones
  • Evaporator and condensing units for cold rooms and pre-cooling areas
  • Cold room panels, insulated doors and strip curtains for temperature control
  • Extraction fans for wash areas and high-heat zones
  • Water pumps for cleaning, transfer and process points
  • Solar backup support for selected circuits, controls and critical refrigeration loads
  • Auto aircon service support for site vehicles and delivery fleet

Where needed, we also supply HVAC tools and parts for maintenance teams who want to handle routine work in-house but still call for specialist installation or fault finding.

Layout and planning advice before the build goes too far

Packhouses often run into trouble because the refrigeration space and the handling space are planned separately. Airflow then fights against the workflow. Doors sit open too long, warm air enters the cold side, and the staff end up working harder than they should. A better layout puts product movement, staff movement and temperature control in the same conversation from day one.

For a new build or an upgrade, we usually look at ceiling height, door positions, product dwell time, drainage, power supply, wash area placement and how trucks enter and exit the site. If the building sits in a dusty area near open yards or roads, filtration and intake positioning become even more important. In some cases a small change in fan placement saves a lot of money later.

  • Keep cold room doors away from direct sun where possible
  • Separate dirty wash areas from finished product storage
  • Allow clear service access around compressors and fan motors
  • Plan drainage so standing water does not sit near electrical gear
  • Size backup supply for the loads that matter most, not every single item

Common mistakes we see in storage and handling areas

One common mistake is undersizing the cooling system and hoping the room will catch up later. It usually does not, especially when pallets arrive warm or the door opens often. Another problem is poor insulation around ceilings, door frames and pipe penetrations. A room can look finished on the outside and still leak temperature badly.

We also see packhouses where ventilation is added after the plant is already running, which means the final result is noisy, uneven and expensive to operate. The same goes for electrical supply and backup planning. If the site cannot handle load-shedding without ruining product, then the equipment plan was never complete. Keeping a service gap around fans, valves and controls also gets ignored more often than it should, and that turns simple maintenance into a half-day job.

Good commissioning matters as well. If the temperature probes, timers and fan settings are not checked properly, the system may run but not perform. That is where a proper handover saves money and headaches.

Budget ranges for packhouse work in Rand

Budgets vary a lot because packhouses differ in size, crop type and how much of the process must stay chilled. As a practical guide, smaller ventilation upgrades and localised air movement can start from about R18 000 to R65 000 depending on fittings and access. Basic refrigeration repairs or component replacements may sit from R8 500 to R40 000 when a unit can be repaired rather than replaced.

Cold room builds, pre-cooling areas and multi-room storage setups can range from about R120 000 to well over R900 000, especially if insulation, doors, controls and backup supply are included. Solar backup installation for critical loads can start around R45 000 for a focused system and rise with battery size and changeover requirements. We usually advise owners to budget for installation, commissioning, service access and a first round of spares, because the cheapest quote often leaves those out.

Support for Kimberley and Northern Cape operations

Modern Equipment is based in New Park, Kimberley and supports sites in Roodepan, Galeshewe, Kuruman, Upington and surrounding areas. For packhouse clients, that local reach matters because breakdowns do not wait for a convenient day. Our team can assist with aircon installation, servicing, refrigeration repairs, cold room builds, ventilation installations, pump installations, pump repairs, solar backup installation, auto aircon service and commissioning support.

Our practical approach is to keep things usable for real sites. That means considering dust, heat, power interruptions, service access and the people who will work there every day. If a packhouse needs a supply plan for parts, workshop support or field service, we can work around the season rather than after it. The right setup keeps produce moving and reduces spoilage before it becomes a write-off.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

What packhouse systems do you supply and support?

We support ventilation, refrigeration, cold room builds, pumps, solar backup and auto aircon related site needs, with installation, repairs and commissioning support.

Can you help with load-shedding planning for packhouse equipment?

Yes. We look at which loads must stay live, then plan backup power around refrigeration, controls and critical ventilation instead of oversizing everything.

Do you work outside Kimberley?

Yes. We are based in New Park, Kimberley and support packhouse clients in Roodepan, Galeshewe, Kuruman, Upington and nearby Northern Cape areas.
