Restaurants

Restaurants need cooling, extraction and refrigeration that can handle heat, smoke and long trading hours. Modern Equipment supports food service sites in Kimberley and across the Northern Cape with practical supply, installation and service.

Keeping diners comfortable from lunch rush to late trade

In a restaurant, comfort is not only about the customer. If the dining room gets too warm, staff slow down, food service feels cramped and people leave quicker than planned. In Kimberley and surrounding towns, the heat can build fast, especially on summer afternoons and in packed rooms with glass frontage or open kitchens.

We help food service sites plan air-conditioning for the dining area, not just by room size but by seating density, door traffic and the heat coming off the kitchen. A small café with a few tables will need a different setup from a full dine-in venue with a bar, takeaway counter and separate private area. Good planning also matters during load-shedding, because once power returns the system should recover without trips or damage.

For many restaurants, the first step is a proper site check. That lets us see where hot spots form, where air gets trapped, and whether the wall space, roof access or ceiling void can take the equipment safely.

Typical equipment for a working restaurant site

Most restaurant jobs use a mix of cooling, ventilation and refrigeration gear. The exact set depends on the menu, hours and layout, but these are common items we supply and support:

  • Split-type air-conditioning for dining rooms, waiting areas and staff spaces
  • Kitchen extraction fans and ducting for cooking vapour and heat control
  • Refrigeration units for fridges, freezers and prep storage
  • Cold room panels, doors and refrigeration components for larger food stores
  • Auto aircon service for delivery vehicles and site support vehicles
  • Solar backup gear for selected loads where food safety is a concern
  • Pumps and accessories where water transfer or drainage support is needed

Some sites only need a few units and a vented kitchen hood. Others need a complete cold storage solution with backup power planning. We also help with commissioning support so the equipment is checked properly before handover, rather than being left to run badly from day one.

Planning the layout before you buy anything

The layout should be planned around how the restaurant actually works. Dining comfort, kitchen heat and fridge access all affect each other. If the indoor unit blows straight onto tables, guests can feel uncomfortable. If extraction is weak, cooking heat drifts into the dining area and the aircon works harder than it should. That costs money every month.

For new builds and upgrades, we normally look at ceiling height, door positions, kitchen position, window exposure and where staff move during service. In bigger venues, it often pays to separate zones so the dining room, kitchen pass and storage areas are not all running on one setting. This gives better control and lower running costs.

For restaurants in places like Roodepan, Galeshewe, Kuruman and Upington, local conditions matter too. Dust, heat and long cable runs can affect performance. On some sites, the best solution is not the biggest unit, but the one that suits the layout and can be serviced without trouble.

What food service owners often get wrong

We are often called in after a site has been fitted quickly and the problems only show later. A common mistake is undersized cooling in the dining room. Another is a kitchen extraction setup that moves air but not enough of it, so smoke, grease and heat still drift into the service area.

Other mistakes include poor positioning of refrigeration units, blocked airflow around condensers, and no allowance for maintenance access. If a unit sits where staff must stack boxes against it, it will struggle. If cold room doors are left too small for trolleys or stock rotation, handling becomes slow and waste goes up.

  • No space allowed for cleaning filters and coils
  • Incorrect pipe or cable runs that make servicing difficult
  • Cold room doors fitted where traffic creates damage
  • Extraction fans installed without proper make-up air
  • Trying to save on backup power for fridges and freezers

A small oversight can lead to higher power use, unhappy guests and spoilage. It is better to get the layout right from the start, even if that means changing the plan once before installation.

Budget ranges that make sense in Rand

Restaurant budgets vary a lot because size, capacity and working hours all change the spec. A small dining room aircon installation may start from around R12 000 to R25 000, depending on the unit size, pipe length and mounting work. Larger multi-zone dining spaces can move into the R35 000 to R90 000 range once more than one unit is needed.

Kitchen extraction systems often start from about R18 000 for simpler fan and duct work, but a more complete hood, ducting and controls setup can run from R45 000 upwards. Cold room projects can begin around R55 000 for smaller food storage spaces and go much higher for larger panels, refrigeration sets and better insulation.

For backup support, solar or battery-linked solutions depend on the loads you want to carry. A focused setup for selected refrigeration can be planned from about R30 000, while broader site support may need a larger budget. We always prefer to price by actual use, so you are not paying for equipment you do not need.

How we support restaurants in Kimberley and beyond

Modern Equipment has been serving the Northern Cape since 2002 from New Park, Kimberley. Restaurants, cafés, takeaways and guest-house kitchens in New Park, Galeshewe, Roodepan, Kuruman and Upington all face different service issues, but the basics stay the same: keep people comfortable, keep food safe and keep the equipment easy to maintain.

Our team can assist with aircon installation, refrigeration repairs, cold room builds, ventilation installations, pump installations, solar backup installation, auto aircon service and commissioning support. That gives one point of contact when a venue needs a new dining room unit, a faulty fridge checked, or a kitchen extraction problem sorted before a busy weekend. Marius Jacobus van der Merwe leads the business with support from a local team that knows the pressure of trading hours and supply deadlines.

We work practically, with maintenance access in mind. If a system needs routine cleaning, filter changes or fan checks, we plan for that from the start so the restaurant does not lose service time later on.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

What type of air-conditioning suits a restaurant dining area?

Most restaurants use split-type units or multiple units across zones, sized to the room, seating count, glass area and heat from the kitchen. The aim is steady comfort without cold draughts over guests.

Do you also handle the kitchen side, not only customer areas?

Yes. We support kitchen extraction, ventilation, refrigeration and cold room work as well as dining area cooling. That helps the whole site work as one system.

Can you help restaurants with backup during load-shedding?

Yes. We can plan solar backup or selected backup support for refrigeration and key loads, depending on what must stay running and how much power the site needs.
