Customer FAQ

Need quick answers on sizing, servicing, lead times and site visits? Modern Equipment in New Park, Kimberley helps homes, farms and businesses across the Northern Cape with practical support for aircon, refrigeration, pumps, solar backup and ventilation.

How we help before you book a site visit

If you are not sure what you need, start with the basics and we will guide you from there. Tell us the room size, the type of building, how many people use the space, and whether the problem is cooling, freezing, airflow, water pressure or power backup. That gives us enough to decide if a phone estimate is enough or if we should visit site.

For air-conditioning and ventilation, we usually ask for room measurements in metres, ceiling height, window size and any heat load from ovens, servers or direct sun. For pumps, we need tank size, pipe length and whether the issue is pressure, transfer or borehole supply. For cold rooms, we ask about the products you store, the target temperature and how often the door opens.

  • Take a clear photo of the equipment nameplate if it is available.
  • Send the site suburb and town, such as New Park, Roodepan, Galeshewe, Kuruman or Upington.
  • Note any load-shedding, generator or solar backup already in use.

Sizing questions for aircon, cold rooms and pumps

Correct sizing matters more than most people think. An aircon that is too small runs hard and struggles on hot Kimberley afternoons. One that is too large can cycle too quickly and leave a room damp and uneven. The same applies to pumps and refrigeration gear, where the wrong size wastes power and gives poor service life.

We check the use of the space, not only the floor area. A small boardroom with many people needs a different unit from a private office. A butcher or takeaway in town needs a different cold room from a drinks store. For pumps, we look at flow, head and the distance from source to point of use. If you are unsure, we will talk it through and explain the options in plain language, no fuss.

  • Homes are often sized by room metres and sun exposure.
  • Commercial spaces need a full check of heat, airflow and occupancy.
  • Cold rooms need product type, door usage and temperature range.

Servicing, repairs and how often to book

Most equipment gives better service when it is checked before it fails. Aircon units need filter cleaning, drain checks and coil cleaning, especially in dusty areas around Kimberley and the wider Northern Cape. Refrigeration systems need leak checks, thermostat testing and attention to noisy fans or poor cooling. Pumps should be checked for pressure loss, seal wear and electrical issues before they leave you without water.

If you notice weak airflow, warm air, ice on pipes, odd smells, tripping breakers or long run times, do not wait. A small issue can turn into a much bigger repair. Our workshop team can service, repair and test units, and our field service technician can attend site where needed. If parts are required, Charlene and the stores team will confirm what is available and what needs to be ordered.

  • Aircon filters: check monthly in dusty areas.
  • Cooling systems: book a service before summer starts.
  • Pumps: inspect more often if water quality is poor or the unit runs daily.

Lead times, parts and emergency turnaround

Lead times depend on the job. A simple service can often be planned quickly. A full cold room build, solar backup installation or major pump repair may need a site visit, material check and a schedule for the installation team. We keep the process practical so you know what is happening and when.

Where possible, we use available stock and standard sizes to save time. If a special part is needed, we will let you know before we continue. For businesses that cannot stop trading, we can plan work around trading hours, production times or out-of-hours access. In hot weather or during load-shedding, that planning matters more than people expect.

For urgent faults, send us the fault, the town, and whether the unit is still running. That helps us decide if we can talk you through a quick check or need to send someone out.

What happens during a site visit

Site visits are there to get the facts right first time. Lerato and the sales team may start with questions, then Ayanda will help coordinate the job if measurements or installation planning are needed. At the visit we check the space, the power supply, pipe routes, mounting points, airflow and any access limits. On farms and remote sites, we also look at water source, distance and practical access for tools and equipment.

We work across New Park, Kimberley, Roodepan, Galeshewe, Kuruman and Upington, so we understand different building types and local conditions. Coastal humidity is not the issue here, but dust, heat, voltage changes and long cable runs can be. If the site has municipal limits, access restrictions or body corporate rules, tell us early so we can plan properly.

  • Keep the work area clear if possible.
  • Make sure someone is available to give access and answer questions.
  • Have old drawings, meter boxes or previous service notes ready if you have them.

How to get the right answer the first time

The fastest way to get a useful answer is to send complete information in one message. Include your name, company or property type, town, suburb, equipment type, and the problem you are seeing. Add photos if you can. If you want an install, tell us whether the job is a replacement or a new fitment, and whether the area already has power, drains and space for outdoor units.

We will then advise whether you need a service, a repair, a new installation or a commissioning support visit. Marius and the team have been serving the Northern Cape since 2002, so the advice is based on real site work, not guesswork. If your first message is short, that is fine too, we will ask what is needed one step at a time.

Questions we get asked

How do I know what size aircon I need?

Send the room size in metres, ceiling height, how the room is used, and how much direct sun it gets. If there are many people or heat-producing items, that changes the size needed.

Can you service equipment at my site in Kimberley or nearby towns?

Yes. We cover New Park, Roodepan, Galeshewe, Kuruman and Upington, and we can arrange site visits for servicing, repairs, commissioning and installations where access is suitable.

What should I send before asking for a quote?

A photo, the fault or project description, the suburb or town, and any measurements you have. For pumps and cold rooms, include pressure, pipe length, temperature target or storage use if you know it.
